Hanlon is a well-established solid community of fifty-five tree-lined blocks of meticulously maintained properties and long-term active residents with a working vision for preserving a high quality of life. The neighborhood is a preferred address and attracts new residents as soon as properties become available.
Many Hanlon residents have been here for 20, 30 even 40 years and are the 2nd or 3rd owners of their beautifully maintained homes. "Newcomers" are always welcome and invited to enhance their investment by participating in the community. Hanlon's eastern boundary is flanked by one of the most beautiful best-kept secrets in Maryland - Hanlon Park. Hanlon Park with Lake Ashburton is a hundred acre park with two playgrounds, a pavilion, softball and football fields, tennis courts and a "bowl" area with great sound acoustics for those warm weather concerts. |

The atmosphere is peaceful and quiet. The shade of the tree-lined streets and the manicured lawns create a scenic pathway as you walk around the community and then to Hanlon Park. Joggers and walkers take their regular steps around the reservoir that is Lake Ashburton. Parents take their children to play on the two state-of-the art playgrounds. The pathways are used by bikers, skaters and steppers. The sounds of organized sports and pick-up games let you hear children enjoying each other. Picnics are enjoyed at the pavilion and in the "bowl" nearly all year round. The hills are perfect for sleigh riding during those rare snowstorms. The picture painted by the sun rising and setting on the water makes
you appreciate living in Hanlon everyday of every season.
Schools at all levels are within walking distance. One elementary school, BCPS Hilton Elementary School #21, is in the heart of the community. There are two middle schools and three high schools that surround us. We are also in the midst of higher learning with Baltimore City Community College - Liberty Campus to the east and Coppin State University to the south.
Your commute is very convenient. Hanlon is only a few minutes from downtown and major highways 83, 95, 695 and 70. The subway and light rail systems are a short distance. There is a local mall and the highways give you access around the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Public recreational facilities include Cahill Performing Arts and Cultural Enrichment Center, Liberty Recreation Center, Forest Park Golf Course, Carrie Murray Outward Bound Center and two other beautiful parks - Druid Hill and Leakin with the Gwynns Falls Watershed Trails. There are two for-profit spa and exercise facilities. Medical services are available at the Garwyn Oaks Medical Center, University of Maryland Outpatient Care,
Sinai and Kernan Hospitals, and a few independent practices. The multi-family buildings include the Elizabethan, which was recently restored to luxury units.
In addition to the picturesque scenery, variety of desirable housing styles, and proximity to education, recreation and conveniences, Hanlon has a strong neighborhood organization. The Hanlon Improvement Association has been in existence for more than thirty years. The goal is to ensure the community moves forward and addresses the demands of today and the future. There are monthly meetings, a periodic newsletter, an annual family picnic, an annual concert, a partnership with Hilton Elementary School and several community activities and beautification projects to bring neighbors together as we keep Hanlon stable. Neighboring communities are of the same mindset and through affiliation with the Greater Northwest Community Coalition, we are working together to collectively plan and implement strategies that comprehensively benefit and preserve the tranquility of the region. |

Hanlon consists of a variety of solidly built housing ranging from very large detached wood frame three-story houses to two-story brick row houses with a sprinkling of two-story stone and brick cape cods.
All have front and back porches, and basements. Many properties have spacious yards, driveways and garages. The stately frame houses were built between 1900 and 1930, the sturdy row houses and cape cods from 1950 to 1960. Many of the interiors have strong slat and plaster walls, decorative and ornamented woodwork, doors and molding. Old country kitchens and windows are set just right to capture the gentle cross winds and breezes of the spring, summer and fall seasons. |

Hanlon Park was named after "Ned" Hanlon, one of the first managers of the Baltimore Orioles. This,
like many other communities, was originally established as a suburb of Baltimore City proper (downtown). There were several large estates and summer homes. Two of our streets retain the estate names, Vickers Road for the owner George R. Vickers and Alto Road for the estate name Mount Alto; this one estate stretched to Windsor Hills. |
