Charming, affordable, beautiful neighborhood with an active community association. Located on the northern boundary of the city, just east of York Road. This neighborhood is surrounded by pedestrian friendly neighborhoods and parks and busy tot lot. It is a pleasant walk from the historic Senator Theatre featuring first run and premier movies, with its supporting restaurants, bars, coffee shops and famous New York style bagel shop. Also close are neighborhood groceries and carry out stores accessible during snowstorms such as a gourmet Giant. Good Samaritan Hospital is nearby. Neighborliness is at its best with the widespread practice of entrusting house keys to each other for those moments when the kids forget their keys or the dog needs to be walked by a neighbor or the house needs to be checked during vacation. In addition, Lake Walker provides easy access to public transportation as well as Northern Parkway, the Jones Falls Expressway, downtown, Towson and the Baltimore Beltway. |

Lake Walker contains a wide variety of dwellings ranging from spacious tudor-style townhouses built in the late 30s, and attractive frame cottages from the late 20s to an eclectic array of more modern houses; and even a few large, stately turn-of-the-century homes.
In Chinquapin Hollow, architect Lawrence Menefee designed attached and semi-detached houses featuring an unorthodox arrangement at the time. Kitchens are in front with the remainder of the first floor space as an open dining/living area opening out to a deck overlooking a wooded stream bed. It is said that this re-arrangement of the typical Baltimore rowhouse precipitated the designation "townhouse". In addition to the three bedrooms on the second floor, the compactly designed houses feature walk-out basement giving a three-story effect in the rear. |

In 1900, most of what is now Lake Walker was part of the Fisher Farm. There were a few rather grand houses along Walker Avenue and York Road. At that time Lake Avenue extended no further eastward than York Road. The first major development was York Road in the late 20s, featuring two styles of cottages along Cedarcroft, Hollen and Highwood. |
