Designated an Historic District in 1988, Original Northwood represents the largest unified collection of the architect, John A. Ahlers, whose planning for the inclusion of the natural terrain in his design, made Original Northwood among the first totally planned communities in the nation. The canopy of oaks and elms are enjoyed today as a result of Ahlers’ planning. Slate roofs are another prominent feature of the neighborhood and an additional element that helps to blend the homes with the surrounding environment. |

Most of the homes are stately brick Colonials, stone Tudors or classic townhouses built in the 1930s. All homes in the neighborhood are unified by their brick or stone exterior and slate roofs. The original houses, in particular, were embellished with such features as elaborate fireplace mantels and crafted millwork, including fancy crown moldings. The houses are durable, built with thick plaster walls strengthened by the use of horsehair. |

By January 1, 1932, about 25 families had bought homes in Original Northwood. Today, Original Northwood is comprised of 369 homes and is one of the top 15 city neighborhoods in wealth. |
