Remington is a very diverse and tight-knit community. Many of the residents were born and raised here; some moved out only to return. There is a strong sense of "community" and people are proud of where they live. We have over 90 businesses and are within walking distance of the Baltimore Museum of Art. Within the various blocks of our community we have a mixture of economic class structures. Some of the blocks have large yards, tree-lined streets and large porches, whereas other streets have no yards, no porches, and are small two-story rowhomes where stoop sitting is the tradition. In order to get relief from the heat in the summer, people sit on their front steps, better known as the "stoop," to socialize and enjoy the breezes of the great outdoors. |

We are a neighbor, in walking distance, to the following communities: Charles Village, South Charles Village, Johns Hopkins University, Stone Hill, Brick Hill, Hampden, Wyman Park, Harwood, Abell, and Waverly.
We are also lucky to have the #27 bus line come right through our community to provide easy transportation in and out of the area. This bus route connects to the Light Rail and the Subway. You can also walk several blocks in any direction to connect with other bus lines.
Additionally, the Sun Cab Company is headquartered at the southern end of our community. You can easily go without a car in our neighborhood. |

Here is a bit of history on the types of houses located in the neighborhood. Two-story Italianate homes of the 1880's are located along Fawcett Street. Extensive building occurred in the northern and middle sections of Remington from 1914 through the 1920s. The two types of row houses most commonly constructed were marble and daylight styles. Marble houses usually had flat fronts, although some were swell-fronted or bowed, and featured decorative use of marble and stained glass. Edward J. Gallagher built many of the houses on West 27th and West 28th and on Huntingdon Avenue. George Schoenhals built more elaborate daylight homes in the neighborhood's northern section in the 1920s along Cresmont Avenue. He also built similar houses to the north on the west side of Wyman park. In 1905, the congregation built the Guardian Angel Episcopal church at West 27th Street and Huntingdon Avenue. On the north end of Remington, the United States Public Health Service Hospital was built on the Remington Avenue site. The nineteenth century buildings were razed, and in 1934, a 290-bed structure was built to take its place as the second largest marine hospital in the country. The name of the United States Marine Service Hospital was changed in 1951 to U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. Today, the Wyman Park Medical Center is part of the Johns Hopkins Health System. By Congressional designation, it is still a uniformed service treatment facility, but it also serves community patients and is a provider for the Johns Hopkins Health Plan ad other health maintenance organizations. |

| Although it is heavily interlaced with light industrial and commercial establishments, Remington maintains distinct neighborhood characteristics with its clusters of moderate-sized brick and formstone row houses. The community bears the surname of William Remington, an early landowner who formerly held property in the heart of the northern portion of the area. The Jones Falls and its mills, the Falls Road Turnpike, numerous quarries, and various railroads are featured in the story of Remington's past. Today this community is a working class neighborhood composed of diverse ethnic and racial groups. |
