Description

Greenmount West is the residential section of Baltimore’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District.  Located adjacent to Penn Station and Charles Street, this rapidly revitalizing neighborhood, which is rich in diversity, is quickly becoming home to many young artists and commuters.  Greenmount West contains artist housing, renovated rowhomes and ample green space. Commercial district revitalization continues to gain momentum along North Avenue with the addition of numerous new restaurants, theaters, galleries, music venues and artist studio space. The neighborhood is home to the Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School which opened in September 2008 and will be the future home to FAB: Fashion, Architecture and Basic Design Middle and High public School. Greenmount West is hot on the Johns Hopkins University LiveNearYourWork incentive program with $17,000 toward closing for employees.

History

Greenmount West grew in the 1880's and 90's as a suburb to downtown Baltimore. Greenmount West was a middle class neighborhood with North Ave. as a popular shopping area.  The area changed greatly during World War II as the large houses were made into apartments. Greenmount West, along with Charles North, is one of two neighborhoods that comprise the North Central Historic District, a district listed on the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places. It is the first area in the city to receive the state designation as an arts and entertainment district. The Station North Arts and Entertainment District contains a diverse collection of artist live-work spaces, galleries, rowhomes and businesses - all just steps away from Penn Station, Mount Vernon and ArtScape.

Educational Resources

From pre-school to high school, Baltimore City’s schools serve students and families across more than 225 neighborhoods. Parents and students have numerous choices from public, private, parochial, and charter schools. Many elementary schools are zoned geographically, but are increasingly becoming schools of choice. All high schools are choice schools and all middle schools are becoming schools of choice in 2010-2011. This means students can apply to attend any school in the City regardless of their home address; some schools do have admission criteria. All charter schools and Transformation Schools have lotteries for admission.

Baltimore offers a wealth of opportunities when it comes to higher education at both the undergraduate, graduate and technical education levels. The seventeen colleges and universities within or near the City enroll more than 120,000 students. Through the Baltimore Collegetown Network, 16 area colleges cooperate and share resources, such as shuttle buses and libraries.
