Old Goucher

Description

Old Goucher is entering a new phase in its history. The neighborhood, originally middle class brownstones and a college campus, gradually shifted to a mostly office and retail area. Over the past decade the trend has been reversed, with hundreds of residential units coming on line, mostly within its historic buildings. Developers and new residents are attracted to the areas central location, transportation links, and convenient mix of retail services. The neighborhood deserves its excellent and increasing walk scores.

History

The area that is now Old Goucher was a rural area with farms and large country homes until the 1870’s. The area became ripe for development as the Jones Falls was bridged on the city’s main north bound streets after the Civil War. The key early development was Dr. John F. Goucher’s decision to build Lovely Lane Methodist Church and Baltimore Women’s College along St. Paul Street starting in 1884. The College was later renamed Goucher College and gives the neighborhood its name and several impressive granite buildings.

Both the college and the surrounding community grew steadily and the neighborhood was built out before 1900.The community remained mostly residential until after the Second World War. After the war the college moved to Towson and many of the existing buildings were converted to business uses. At one time the area was home to many printing, advertising, and architecture firms. Over the past decade several former office buildings were converted to residential use and the population began to increase again. The Old Goucher College National Historic District encompasses this largely intact late Victorian neighborhood.

Educational Resources

From pre-school to high school, Baltimore City’s schools serve students and families across more than 225 neighborhoods. Parents and students have numerous choices from public, private, parochial, and charter schools. Many elementary schools are zoned geographically, but are increasingly becoming schools of choice. All high schools are choice schools and all middle schools are becoming schools of choice in 2010-2011. This means students can apply to attend any school in the City regardless of their home address; some schools do have admission criteria. All charter schools and Transformation Schools have lotteries for admission.

Baltimore offers a wealth of opportunities when it comes to higher education at both the undergraduate, graduate and technical education levels. The seventeen colleges and universities within or near the City enroll more than 120,000 students. Through the Baltimore Collegetown Network, 16 area colleges cooperate and share resources, such as shuttle buses and libraries.

Shopping Centers

The best thing about living and working in the Old Goucherneighborhood is definitely LOCATION. There isn't a more central place in the city...most of my favorite restaurants and bars are 5 minutes or less from my doorstep, and we're even closer to I-83 and Penn Station.

I chose the corner of 23rd & St Paul as my home because I'd been driving by this intersection every day for about 7 years...finally it just clicked that it was nearby to everywhere I went!
