Description

Garwyn Oaks is one of Baltimore’s older communities and is part of the Healthy Neighborhoods initiative. Many residents have lived in the community for 30 years or more. The community is nestled among bountiful trees, flower gardens, open spaces, and wide, well-lit streets. The beauty of the area is in its tranquility, abundant greenery, and variety of housing. It is a community of families, children and seniors alike; backyard cookouts, young people playing ball and riding bikes. The community is comprised of professionals, white and blue collar workers, self-employed, and retired individuals. The community has over 300 properties.

History

Garwyn Oaks’ history is intertwined with the communities of areas known as Walbrook and Windsor Hills, which were formed from estates of Baltimore’s elite. The estate of George R. Vickers, Mount Alto, provided the land for the community of Garwyn Oaks. Much of the distinctive development in the area, that is, the single family detached, wood frame and shingle cottage homes were built in the early 1900’s. The Garwyn Oaks United Neighbors Association, Inc., originally the Garrison Blvd United Neighbors Association (GBUNA) founded in 1982, has worked to maintain the beauty, tranquility, and distinction of the area.

Educational Resources

From pre-school to high school, Baltimore City’s schools serve students and families across more than 225 neighborhoods. Parents and students have numerous choices from public, private, parochial, and charter schools. Many elementary schools are zoned geographically, but are increasingly becoming schools of choice. All high schools are choice schools and all middle schools are becoming schools of choice in 2010-2011. This means students can apply to attend any school in the City regardless of their home address; some schools do have admission criteria. All charter schools and Transformation Schools have lotteries for admission.

Baltimore offers a wealth of opportunities when it comes to higher education at both the undergraduate, graduate and technical education levels. The seventeen colleges and universities within or near the City enroll more than 120,000 students. Through the Baltimore Collegetown Network, 16 area colleges cooperate and share resources, such as shuttle buses and libraries.
