History
Mayfield was added to the National Register of Historic places in January 2004. Most of the homes were built between 1890 and 1945. It has stately old homes built by judges, developers, brewery owners in the first half of the 20th century. The boulevards of the neighborhoods were part of the Olmstead Brothers greenway plan from Hopkins Homewood campus to Lake Montebello. Olmstead Brothers are best known for the design of Central Park in New York. Restoration of the Lake Montebello reservoir first built in 1880 and road around it created the designated recreation lanes making this a very popular walking and exercise area in Northeast Baltimore. The new master plans for Clifton Park and Herring Run Park promise more improvements and renovations in the years to come. Herring Run hosts soccer leagues and baseball in season. Fans of HBO’s drama series - The WIRE-- will notice that Mayfield is home to the fictional ex-wife and two sons of the main character Detective James McNulty. Mayfield has residents that are artists, writers, musicians, judges, federal government professionals, journalists, computer specialists, community leaders and activists, health professionals of all kinds, business owners, lawyers, retirees, contractors, sports communications and real estate professionals. Some of the residents of Mayfield grew up here as children, met and married their spouses in Mayfield then raised their family in Mayfield. And now their grown children are home owners in Mayfield too.
