Westgate

Location

The Westgate Community is uniquely situated in both the city and the county. The city portion is in West Baltimore one block west of Ten Hills and is a gateway between the City and the County. Westgate features an eclectic mix of vintage homes situated on tree-lined streets including bungalows, cottages, American Foursquares, Tudors, and  Dutch Colonials from the 1920’s to 30’s. Amenities include wide front porches, oak hardwood floors, fireplaces and stained glass windows. Residents enjoy a suburban feel with the urban convenience of being 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore or the airport.

Description

A welcoming, active and diverse community with homes situated in rolling hills featuring mature tree canopy and narrow streets with sidewalks.

History

Before the development of Westgate there were homes along Old Frederick Rd. to the north and around North Bend Rd. to the south, many owned by city bankers and businessmen. The installation of the trolley system in 1899 along Edmondson Avenue between Ellicott City and Baltimore City allowed a quick and comfortable commute that was not only possible but inviting. The northern sections were laid out in 1913 and built up in the 20’s and 30’s. The Westgate Community Association was established in 1931. Originally the area was two separate communities, Westgate in the city and Meridale Farms in the county. In the mid-1960’s the homeowners in Meridale Farms voted to become a part of the Westgate Community.

Educational Resources

From pre-school to high school, Baltimore City’s schools serve students and families across more than 225 neighborhoods. Parents and students have numerous choices from public, private, parochial, and charter schools. Many elementary schools are zoned geographically, but are increasingly becoming schools of choice. All high schools are choice schools and all middle schools are becoming schools of choice in 2010-2011. This means students can apply to attend any school in the City regardless of their home address; some schools do have admission criteria. All charter schools and Transformation Schools have lotteries for admission.

Baltimore offers a wealth of opportunities when it comes to higher education at both the undergraduate, graduate and technical education levels. The seventeen colleges and universities within or near the City enroll more than 120,000 students. Through the Baltimore Collegetown Network, 16 area colleges cooperate and share resources, such as shuttle buses and libraries.

Places of Worship

We initially chose Westgate because Bob works in D.C. and takes the Marc train from the Halethorpe Station. The location is great because we’re close to the highways, a short drive from downtown and we can walk our dog throughout the community. We love the charming older homes because they have so much character and the old trees everywhere make our neighborhood so pretty in all the seasons.
