Family Life

The multi-generational families thriving in neighborhoods all around our city are a testament to the fact that Baltimore City living is not just for young people or singles.

The Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance published a great list of the top ten reasons to raise kids downtown, which we here at Live Baltimore think could apply to raising kids in neighborhoods all across the city.

Here are just a few reasons why families love living in Baltimore City:

  • Convenience:  City residents often only need to walk one or two blocks to get their dry cleaning, pick up a loaf of bread or go out to a local restaurant.  Shopping opportunities are plentiful in Baltimore City, including our vibrant Buy Local Baltimore campaign.  Get out of that rush hour traffic jam on 695, and have more time to do the things you love!
  • Schools:  Baltimore City has many great schools- from Blue Ribbon public elementary schools, city-wide magnet schools for arts or technology, to a new wave of public charter schools, and private schools.  Click here to explore your many options.
  • Culture & Nightlife:  Baltimore City offers access to everything from museums, theater and concerts to sporting events, festivals, zoos and historical sites.  Live in the region's cultural center, and be within walking distance of nighttime entertainment!  Our fabulous Enoch Pratt Free Library system has tons of events for kids and families, and also runs a live homework help line.
  • Active Lifestyle:  Families in Baltimore City enjoy wonderful parks, playgrounds and community gardens.

Childcare

While Baltimore City’s public school system offers full-day kindergarten to all students, families may find that they need childcare for younger children as well.  There are many resources available to help parents find quality, regulated childcare in their neighborhood or near their work.
