Faith in the City
Many of Baltimore’s Historic Landmark buildings are churches, as well as some synagogues and mosques. Baltimore is home of the country’s first Cathedral, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as the oldest synagogue in the state, the B’nai Israel Synagogue. These places of worship are much more than just beautiful historical architecture. In many neighborhoods, faith groups are centers of community services such as soup kitchens, youth after school programs, job training and many other social services. African American churches in Baltimore such as the Orchard Street Church, formed part of the underground railroad, and were also centers of the movement for Civil Rights in the 1960’s. You can find faith groups listed in many of the neighborhood profiles on our website. We’ve put together a list of links below to help you start your search. Please note that this is not a comprehensive listing as there are hundreds of places of worship in Baltimore City and many churches, temples, mosques and synagogues do not have websites. You can always do a web search for the type of congregation you are seeking.
