Safety

IMPORTANT: In case of emergency, call 911 to report crime.

Crime and safety are certainly important considerations when thinking about where to live.  There are links on our website under each neighborhood profile for you to directly link to the Baltimore Police Department’s Crime Map and search the database of reported crime in that area.

The Baltimore Police Department’s jurisdiction encompasses an area of 86.0 square miles: 78.3 sq. miles of land and 7.7 sq. miles on waterways.  Baltimore is divided into nine police districts, which are each headed by a local police station.  Not sure which district you belong to? The District Finder will help you locate the district.  Metro Crime Stoppers (MCS) gives Baltimore residents the ability to anonymously report crime tips to the Police. Knowing that anonymity eliminates intimidation, citizens can call 410.276.8888 to report crime and potentially earn a monetary reward. MCS is a volunteer organization actively supporting law enforcement agencies in solving crime in our community.

Many neighborhoods also participate in COP walks (Citizens on Patrol).  COP walks deter crimes of opportunity by reporting items that criminals consider attractive, such as vacant homes, dark alleys, etc. to Baltimore City’s 311 system and to the police who walk with the group.  Check with your neighborhood organization to see if they have active COP walks, or contact Operation Crime Watch to learn about starting a Citizens on Patrol Program.

Baltimore City is an employment hub for the region, with opportunities in many fields which are expanding such as healthcare and bio-technology.  There are many opportunities in the service sector in fields such as health, hospitality, maritime commerce, and education.  Tourism has also increased, in part due to the expansion of downtown attractions.  This has increased construction, and also increased the amount of residential properties and people living downtown.  There have been steady increases in hotel occupancy rates, new hotels being built, and a new convention center.  All of these factors have lead to growth in the number of leisure and hospitality jobs.
